Help…paper/potty Training?
Filed under Care & Training Q&As
I have a 1 year old cockapoo that is paper trained. I am moving in a few days and would like for her to start “going” during her walks instead of in my new home on newspaper…how can I make this transition? Also, she acts as if she is too good to use it outside. I have kept her out walking for at least 30 mins. She will sniff and sniff but never go, she plays mostly. But as soon as we get back in she will go to the paper and do her business….how can I get her to stop?

You will have to completely re-do her housebreaking.
First, get rid of the paper.. no more papers in the house. You can take the papers outside, and let her use them outside to adjust… but no more papers in the house!
Treat her like a new puppy. Take her outside every hour to begin with.. encourage her to potty. If she doesnt go within 10-15 mins, take her inside and crate her for about 10-15 mins and try again. Keep doing this until she finally goes. When she goes, praise like crazy.
Do not let her loose in the house unattended. If you cant supervise her, she needs to be crated.
Its going to take some patience.. but she will get it. A dog can go from paper- training to outside pottying.
Unfortunately, you should have started the outside training a long time ago. You paper train when they are puppies, but as they get older you`re supposed to move the paper closer and closer to the door, finally taking a soiled newspaper outdoors and when you see the puppy looking for the paper, you take it outdoors to the soiled newspaper so the puppy learns that is where she is to go. Now your only hope is to start moving the paper closer to the door and start over as the paper is where she has been trained on. Be consistent in taking her outside, once she goes, keep taking her to the same spot so that she smells her scent. If she goes, praise her lavishly and reward with a treat so she associates that with doing her business outside. Patience and consistency pays off if you stick with it.
Leave a smear of her poo and pee on the paper, and move it to the porch or near the door..Pause and let her sniff it, telling her it is the place to go.
She is likely fearful of going outdoors, as she is used to doing it in a protected area.
Dogs know that predators can find them by following their scent..so, indoors she feels much safer and protected.
You might move her papers to different areas, to get her used to change before expecting her to recognize she should do it when they are moved outside.
I had to make a change with my two cocker spaniels, from paper to outdoor. It was quite simple. I taught them to pee and poop on command, and also to hold it until the regular times when they were to be taken out to pee (instead of whenever they whine at the door). To do this, I kept them in a large cage for sleeping at night. First thing in the morning, I took them to their paper and gave the command I wanted to use. Then I rewarded them immediately with their favorite treat and lots of loving as soon as they had peed. Then after some play time, they were locked up again until a few hours later, when we would repeat the process. After a little while they associated the command with the action, and then we made a smooth transition to outside bathroom.
Its going to be hard, she should be outdoor trainned. She is so used to going in doors and you have taught her its right.
Just walk her when she goes give her treats and praise and when she goes at home say no and take her straight out.
