This way they can smell each other (scent is most important to a dog). When your older dog seems pretty calm about the new puppy's scent, let them in the room together, supervised. Because your dog is 13 and puppies are pretty trying to an older dog's patience, you need to make sure your dog can always get away from the puppy when it becomes too much of a pest to her. A new puppy can revitalize her but she also needs to be able to get away. Also, you need to pet, greet, and feed your older dog first - she's the only used to be an only dog.
