How Long Does It Take To House Train A Puppy?
Filed under Care & Training Q&As
We just got a 7 week old cockapoo.
I know you’re supposed to take them out every 2 hours, but he is honestly peeing every 5 minutes.

How long housetraining takes varies from breed to breed and from dog to dog.
You’re supposed to take them out EVERY HOUR!, right after meals and first thing in the morning and last thing at night and at least once in the middle of the night at this age.
If he’s peeing every 5 minutes, he may have worms.
Ask the breeder when he was last wormed.
Puppies always need worming every 2 weeks till 4mo of age.
Has he had his first puppy shots?
If not, take him to your vet NOW for his first shot! and ask the vet about peeing every 5 minutes. -!-
Try taking him out every hour then. Obviously 2 hours is too long. Take him out right after he wakes up and after vigorous play. If he’s peeing that often, he could have an infection, I would ask your vet.
As for how long it takes, it really depends on the dog. Some breeds take longer than others, and then it also depends on the individual dog.
It will take weeks at least, probably months before he’s completely trustworthy. It also depends on the owners. You have to stay consistent, and patient. Crate training is the best way to go.
Hm, maybe there could be something wrong with him. Well, lucky you!
I know a lot about housetraining and hopefully these tips can help.
When the dog defecates, take the feces and place them onto whatever newspaper or place in your yard that you want the dog to go when it has to urinate or defecate.
Then take your dog and let him see where you have placed the bathroom to be. Say, good dog! And give him some pats to let him understand that it is a good place to “go potty”
And every 2 hours is not exactly accurate. You yourself can make a schedule for the pup to quickly adjust. They have an inner clock that adjusts to its new environment.
I believe the main reason is because the puppy is not old enough to go to a new home. The minimum age to leave home is 8 or 9 weeks. The best thing you can do is try the above tips or wait until he gets used to his surroundings.
Good luck!
Every dog is different. for some reason i find it easier to house train dogs than i can bitches.
Make sure that you take the dog out everytime he wakes up and everytime they have eaten. reward him when he goes outside and ignore the fact that he has done it in the house. dogs love to please you and work out what kind of reward works best for him, i.e a treat, a toy or a cuddle. he will soon work out that he gets rewarded for doing it in certain places and not in others.
usually around 3 – 4 months you will have it cracked. remember his bladder is tiny at the moment so he will need to go lots.
Who ever told you every 2 hours you are suppose to take a puppy out doesn’t know very much about puppies when my dogs was puppies I took them out every 30 minutes and I would take them out first thing of a morning and right after they eat and the last thing at night and my dogs was never crate trained . It takes a lot of patience to house break a puppy but well worth it in the long run
Well do this get some newspaper or wee-wee pads from the store and lay it out and when he pees on the floor tell him no and bring he to the newspaper or wee-wee pad and say yes. that might work. or let him stay outside, and you play with him so he doesn’t make a mess in your house.
Who said every 2 hours?
I took my 9-10 week old puppy out every 30 min when we first got him.
He’s about 4 months now and I take him out every hour when we are at home with him and he’s not crated.
Its different for different dogs. Some take only a few days (Like my dog Crash.) and some take weeks. (Like my other dog Che.) It all depends on the dog.
It took about 6 months for me.
