I Am Interested In Purchasing A Dog, Does Anyone Have Information About A Cockapoo?
Filed under Care & Training Q&As
I would like to know a good breeder or shop where I can purchase the dog in either Nassau County or Western Suffolk County, New York, and want some information on the cockapoo. For example, is the dog good with children, how much exercise does the dog require, and how easy is it to train this dog?

The cockapoo is a mixed breed by breeding a Cocker Spaniel and a Poodle.
You can find them in most animal shelters. And since they are a prime source of income for irresponsible breeders, there are rescue organizations now in place.
Don’t buy from a “pet shop” or from a breeder….adopt one instead.
Cock a poos are small dogs, small dogs can go either way with children. Little one like to pick up small dogs and tend to nip more. If you have younger kids, bigger dogs are better with them. Labs, Retreivers, Collies are great with little kids.
Cock a poos need to be groomed every 6 to 8 weeks costing between $30 & $ 50 a pop. Consider that when choosing.
There is no good REPUTABLE breeder that would breed mutts . Cockapoos are just another designer breed or a fad breed that people would be dumb enough to spend a ton of money on when you could’ve just went to the local shelter and found yourself a small breed that could possibly pure or just a small mix breed . Its better and your saving a ton of money . Cockapoos do not have any standards meaning they could either turn out to look like a poodle or look like a cocker spaniel .They also dont have any regular or standard tempermants , size , weight , or anything. Its a 50 50 chance . Not worth wasting your money on . Go to the shelter and adopt an dog .
why can’t u just go adopt, it’s much better, cockapoos are mutts, it’s not a breed….maybe you should go take a look at the animal shelters first.
I have owned a cockapoo for 6 years, and I know that one dog isn’t the standard for every dog of that breed, but I’ll tell you my experience. I’ve read several times that cockapoos are very trainable dogs, and this has been true for me. They learn very quickly. My dog is a larger cockapoo who requires a daily walk 20 minutes or so, and some indoor playing. He loves children and other dogs, and is very obedient. Like I said, I’m not saying this is true for all cokapoos, but this is my experience. Cockapoos require daily brushing and frequent haircuts, as their fur just grows and grows. Cockapoos are adorable and smart and very good companions. I don’t have anything bad to say about the cockapoo, based on my 6 years of owning one. Whatever breed you pick, good luck!
These other people make it sound like it’s a sin to want a cockapoo. Are they purebreds? No, but you’re still allowed to want one. Since everyone is going to tell you the worst, I’ll add the bright side. My cockapoo has never had any health problems at all. If you don’t neglect his grooming, don’t let him get overgrown he won’t mat and you won’t have problems. I pay 45$ every 6 weeks or longer. He isn’t aggressive or hyper or skiddish. And just like good characteristics of one dog can’t apply to all, neither can bad.
Sure I have info on a Cocker Spaniel Poodle cross. First of all, there are no “good breeders” of these mongrels. There are backyard “breeders”…people that take a cocker, and breed it with a poodle to create a mutt, known to some as a “cockapoo”. So there’s that out of the way.
More info
The dog will be anywhere from 15-40 lbs, depending on the specimens it was bred with. It will likely have wavy hair, not curly like a poodle. It will need REGULAR grooming and that WILL cost money..I’m a groomer in Ontario and I charge $45 for a dog like that, though I’m sure in NY you’d be paying significantly more, perhaps $60+, and that would be every 4-8 weeks depending on the dog and it’s coat. Be prepared for the extra expense.
The cocker/poodles I’ve known have been either overly hyper, or down right mean (due to the cocker in them). Almost all of them have coats that matt very easily and in my opinion aren’t very nice to look at.
Also, cockers are prone to many ear problems, some so badly that they have to have surgeries that leave them deaf.
Personally, I would never recommend a cocker spaniel or anything mixed with one as a family pet. They can be really moody and can bite with little provocation.
Poodles on the other hand, particularly Standards are wonderful family dogs. You still have the grooming expenses, but their personalities are much better.
I have a 10 moth old cockapoo and got him through a friend for free. I would say, try petfinder.com or look up cockapoo rescues- it would be cheaper and they will most likly be house trianed.
All dogs are different- just wanna say that before you get a dog just becuase someone you know has that type of dog and your dog is different.
Well- my Balto is very cuddly and gets along with everyone but I m very carful when its around kids because poodle pups are known to agressive but that is solved with a bit of training. He can hold it until I get home and we now have a basic routine- once in the morning, once in the afternoon and once or twice at night with no accidents inbetween.
He is very smart and I can even trust him off lesh. He doesn’t have one of those annoying puppy barks- he sounds like a full grown dog which I like. He does tend to bark but its getting better with his training. He is a cocker spaniel size with Poodle hair and tail so he needs a cut every-so-often and I give a bath once every 3 weeks or when he is getting sinky: P
I love this breed! I meet another cockapoo that looked more like a poodle and it was so funny that these two were from the same breed!
I really like this breed because of is size, mellow temperment, and hair/fur. If you have any further quesions or want pics, just email me!
Good Luck and I hope you make the right choice!
PS- I can’t believe how negitive most of he people are here- yea its a mutt but it was designed for those alleric to dog fur, like my cousin and aunt. Also, all ‘pure breed’ dogs came from years and years of crossing different wolves and coytes to find one that serves a certsain purpose…dont listen to much to them…
I’m a fan of adopting instead of buying. Try searching http://www.petfinder.com
I had a cockapoo for 7 years.. they are susceptible to diabetes, seizures, and cateracts. Mine had all three. He was, however, a great companion, and fairly easy to train. Their grooming is difficult, so be prepared for that!! There are a lot of cockapoos at most shelters, and since you can’t register them anyway, it shouldn’t matter! Good luck!
You are all into pit bulls. Why do you want a cockapoo?
You shouldn’t decide what dog you want because of it’s looks- you need to check it’s energy level and everything before picking a certain dog. Go to http://www.akc.org and look into certain breeds. Also, make sure you understand how much puppies cost. They need 3 sets of vaccinations starting at 6 weeks of age, spaying/neuturing, and yearly vet check-ups which includes a rabies vaccinations. Also, if you work all day then you do not need a puppy because they require constant attention.
A cockapoo is a mutt. It is a poodle bred to a cocker spaniel. There are no “good” breeders because a GOOD breeder does not breed mutts when there are already so many in shelters. Most of these dogs come from puppy mills and backyard breeders, where living conditions are horrible, health care is non-existant, and the dogs are bred continuously year round to churn out puppies for a profit. It’s a disgusting industry that needs to be stopped.
Also, as a MUTT, cockapoos have no standard anything. They can be any size, shape, color, hair type, temperment, intelligence, etc. You have as much hope of predicting the same traits in any random dog at the pound.
I suggest you save yourself the time and money and just go adopt a furry mutt from your local shelter. You can find an adult that’s already housebroken and possibly even obedience trained, and you’ll be able to introduce him to your kids before you adopt, so you’ll already know what his or her temperment is.
Please don’t be another victim to the ‘designer’ mongrel craze- there is NOTHING special about these dogs. They are not valuable, they are no hypoallergenic or non-shedding (I’m a groomer, and I promise, they DO shed and they DO cause allergies), they are just mutts with silly names designed to rip you off.
Your not going to find a good breeder that raises mixed breeds (designer dogs). Save your money & check out petfinder.com.
A mix breed dog from the shelter is no different than the “designer” dog you spent 7,000 dollars on. Please do the right thing and adopt. Or else youlle be contributing to the dogs being distroyed in shelters. It will save you money.
please chekc your local rescue or go onto…http://www.petfinder.com/
Well you can always try North Shore Animal League… but other than that, I’d reccomend searching the net for a breeder. Make sure to always go SEE the breeder and the dog before buying, never sight unseen.
Anyways.. Cockapoos are a blend of cocker spaniel and poodle. They actually turn out looking like miniature st.bernards for some reason. They tend to be sweet, but can be a bit skiddish. Good with kids, but of course any dog requires proper training (i.e. it treats all humans as the “alpha”).
I prefer “mixed” blended dogs.. they have less problems than other breeds that are way overbred. Generally they’re smarter and healthier.
Of course theres always exceptions… a good thing with puppies is to see if they respond to your voice, thats a good sign generally. Also make sure the eyes are bright and alert. They can be playful, but excess hyperness should be curbed or avoided.
hope that helps
edit: and really man..just adopt a mutt..you’ll be happier, and it sounds less goofy than “cockapoo”
