some people train pets to go on newspaper--moving paper closer to door over period of time; right when he wakes, immediately take him out to void, after he drinks, take him out, this will take a little work on your part, just watch his cues and take him out-usually sniff around looking for place to 'go'-also, if you're allowed, a doogy door is good when training is done-he can go in and out at will.

I have a golden retriever when I was house breaking him I had him sleep with me and took him out every 3 hours at night and every hour during the day. If they do pee on the floor you need to catch them in the action of doing it, then pick them up when he is doing it and tell him not. If you yell at him after he is done it will confuse him. Just make sure you take him out after he sleeps and 5 to 10 min after he eats or drinks, and don't forget to take him out right after playing.
I have a Golden and a Havanese and house broke them in less than 2 weeks. If you do it right your dog will catch on fast. Good luck.
