Is My Dog Mentally Retarded?

have a cockapoo who is one years old. She still pees in the house after I have been trying to train her for months. She isn’t crate trained even after she spends half of the day in there, she STILL barks! She chases the cat and our german shepard. Scarlett always sticks her head inside his mouth and bites him. She bites the carpet, the bottom of the bed, my books, etc. I know she is definitely done teething. She pees next to the window on the cement instead of the grass. She’s a very smart dog. (first in her class to sit, lay down, and shake.)
She goes on three walks a day and goes out to the restroom every hour! She goes to the dog park twice a week. She has plenty of chew toys. She has been to training at Petsmart.

By the way I’m a thirteen year old so give me a break! My mom told me to do this! I have friggin dyslexia! So maybe I spelled it wrong but get the heck over it!

First of all, the house training. Put your dog on a rigidly regular schedule. Get her up at the same time every day and TAKE her outside, don’t just “let” her out. Stay outside until she performs. Take her on a reasonably long walk – even if you have to get up an hour earlier to do it. Give her her breakfast, and in about 20 minutes, take her out again. The key is to TAKE her out on a leash and STAY with her until you see that she has done what she’s out there to do. Take her out immediately when she wakes up. About 20 minutes after each meal, and every hour or two during the day. If she still urinates in the house, decrease the time between outings. If you have to wait for more than a few minutes, increase the time between outings. At bed time, take her out for one final break, and watch her to see that she performs. Then put her in her crate for the night.
She barks and/or whines while in the crate because she’s bored and lonely. Your dog should not be kept in the crate if you are at home.
Give her some chew toys. A size-appropriate Kong toy filled with peanut butter, yogurt, or squeeze cheese and frozen. A deer antler (stay away from rawhide because it swells in the stomach and could cause a real problem). Give her a few plush toys to chew on and probably tear apart. You can get them from goodwill usually for a buck apiece. Wash ‘em, dry ‘em, and give them to her after you’re sure the inside is as dry as it’s going to get.
Right now, she probably urinates so much in the house because it’s about the only way she can get your attention. If she’s in the crate for half the day, she isn’t getting the socialization she needs.
You have to claim the cats and every time your pup gets near the cats, you have to protect the cats. Don’t LET her chase them.
She’s biting probably because she’s teething. Again, the frozen Kong and the deer antler will help. You can get the deer antler at http://www.deerantlersforpups.com/ and you can get a Kong at petsmart or petco or just about any other pet store.
Take her to training sessions at Petco or Petsmart as often as you can. The more people and dogs she meets and greets, the less apprehensive she’ll be toward them as she gets older.
Finally, I think you did a great job on the post; I didn’t spot any misspellings, and there is no evidence of your dyslexia. Two of my sons have dyslexia and now one of them is a police officer – a resource officer for a school and the other is a computer guru who sells, installs, and maintains computer hardware and software. One of these boys didn’t learn to read until he was 13 and was given a copy of the X-Men comic books against my better judgment. That got him started, and he went on to get a college degree in history – which takes a LOT of reading! So hang in there! You’ll learn how to work around the dyslexia so that it doesn’t get in the way of you being and doing whatever you want to be and do!

Your dog is still a baby. One year old does not mean she is mature. You need to keep working with her, take her to more classes at Petsmart or where ever, just to give her something to do and for you to learn more. She is very normal. Just a puppy. Needs lots of attention, socialization and training. Good luck and keep up the walks and training.
Im pretty sure it is impossible for a dog to be mentally retarded. I think you dog is just very high strung and she just needs to be trained correctly. Try taking her to dog training classes at PETCO or some other place. Good luck!
She is a small dog and they r very hard to house train.. they are smarter than u think… this is not ur fault small dogs know how to take Advantage of a situation.. not ur fault u really need to create train this dog and not let her have free roam of the house..
Sounds like shes a very chewy little animal you wil have to get a trainer to teach it not to chew on things in the long run chewing on things can cause a lot of damages and cost alot of money
it sounds like hes bored.. like my dog still does that and hes a cockapoo and rele old. i think they r just rele hyper dogs and are really smart..so no i dont think hes retarded haha
Your dog might not be mentally retarded. Maybe you just need to get the assistance of a dog trainer.
