Is My Puppy Old Enough For Training?

September 6, 2009 by admin
Filed under Care & Training Q&As

My puppy is a 10 week old Cockapoo. The vet says that they recommend waiting 2 more months – until she has completed vaccinations. Petsmart says 10 weeks is fine as long as she is up to date with her shots. She is very aggressive towards both people and dogs, and I really don’t want to wait to get her socialized and properly trained. My mom watches her for me sometimes, and she attacks her dog. Am I putting her in any serious danger by taking her to the class now?

I took my dog to Petsmart when she was 10 weeks old. She did fine. They do make sure the puppies are up to date with their shots. They placed my puppy with other puppies that were her same size. I really believe puppy training at Petsmart was the best thing for my dog. At first she was scared of the other pups and shy away from people and would hide under my chair while we were at the class. But after a few classes she really enjoyed it and we learned alot. The stuff you learn is very beneficial. It also helped us to train our other dog at home. I would also suggest taking the advance class after the beginners class. It definitely was worth every penny. Good Luck!

Absolutely not, you need to get the dog able to interact socially with people and other dogs. Dogs are pack animals they naturally enjoy being around other people and dogs. It will take time and attention to the dog. You as the owner must ensure the dog understands you are the alpha or leader of your dogs pack.

If your dog is healthy and up to date I would not wait! You need to get her into training immediately so she learns early how to behave with others. My mom has always had cockapoo’s and cocker spaniels and they seem to be snippy dogs to start with. She runs a training class now, especially for those breeds, and she highly recommends you get them in as early as possible. She starts the first training classes with 8 week old puppies. Just be sure the trainer only accepts dogs who’s shots are up to date also.
Good luck with your best friend!

well, if your dog is agressive to other dogs, do some home training first. Have one of your friends or neighbours with dogs comeover but have the dogs in a nother room, over the little while your dog will get used to other dogs..by that time, it vacs should be complete and you will be free to go to classes…(You may even be the best one there)!~

your dog is old enough if they have aggression like that then they need to get into training asap. the earlier the better.

It’s mother started training it as soon as it left her womb…don’t stop the process now. Discipline her when she attacks your mother’s dog. She is showing improper social behavior with it.
