Hi all, i just got a new cockapoo/chihuahua mix and was previously kept outdoors most of the time, i would like her to be an indoor dog because the fences we have are rod iron and she can get through, she is 1 1/2 years old. we also have a shih tzu mix about 2 years, female as well, but is a total indoor dog, the cockapoo goes potty outside, but i leash her so she won’t run away through the fence. she seems to always hang out by the glass sliding door leading to the backyard and does not seem to be interested in anything else, she seems very good natured and sweet though, any advice?
thanks.

First, let me say thank you for rescuing this new dog.
Now, remember that adoptions, new homes, new owners, new “siblings” etc are stressful- think of it as a two year old child being taken from the only home/family he has ever known, and ending up in a totally new home with nobody he has ever even met. Adoption of pets is very much the same.
She needs time and space, as well as patience and understanding, to adjust to everything. She will definitely adjust, given time, and will probably appreciate being kept indoors most of the time, and being a much loved member of your family.
Expect to have to train her to go potty ONLY outside, as most outside dogs have never been housebroken, and many BECOME outside dogs because their previous owners lost patience with housebreaking them.
You may want to find a properly sized crate for your new girl, and crate train her now, as it will make it easier to housebreak her even if you can’t be watching her constantly, and the crate will give her the feeling of security while she adjusts to all the newness in her surroundings.
Ok, My knowledge comes from doing mostly…….Keep your mix breed in the house, and watch carefully. If it begins to go in the house, say “no” strongly, pick it up and take it outside immediately. (you might want to keep a leash on it ready to go while training, just be sure it’s not left alone so the leash doesn’t catch on something and choke it) Keep this up every time, and someday he/she should go to the door when it needs to go out. You can also ask it if he/she wants to go out? It will get used to knowing what “Out” is, and will let you know. It may take awhile since it’s been outside so much, you will need lots of patience. But, dogs are susceptible to all kinds of accidents, poisons, bee stings, being stolen, killed, heat, cold, etc. when left outside. They should be inside anyway. If you are faithful, it will happen. I always tell our dogs to “Go to the bathroom” when I let them out, they usually do right away and come back. Hope this helps.
Good for you for taking this dog in and wanting to give her a good and loving home.
Yes, she can be trained to be an indoor dog.
Train her as if she is a puppy. Take her outside on a set schedule and praise her when she goes potty outside.
My brother and sister in law just got a two year old chocolate lab two weeks ago who was an outside dog. His former owner told my SIL that the dog would pee all over the house every time he let him in the house.
Spur is doing great. Yes, he had accidents, but he has house trained fast and with relative ease.
Good luck to you.
this will take time. Long transition. if her life was mostly outdoors try bringing her inside for 30 mins at a time for a day and slowly increase providing the food and water is inside.
if she is female is not so much of a problem
use lots of treats when she goes to toilet outside and reward her loads with praise everytime she performs
when you first bring her into the house give her lots of oppurtunity to go out rewarding her all the time she goes outside to the toilet
if she does have accidents in the house DO NOT tell her off just ignore her and clean it up
should not be a major problem female dogs are very clean anyway
it going to be a little difficult, it will take some time, she has been outside for her whole life 1 1/2 years its 10 1/2 years old in people life and does she get along with your other dog?
let them both out every hour on the hour, hopefully she will catch on from your other dog. GOOD LUCK
You will need to train this dog the same way you did your first dog.
Having the other dog may help a lot.
I would though put a leash on the dog when she goes out to potty. With her being new and confused she could run away and not be able to find her way home. Or she could get run over.
Don’t take any chances!! Take her out on a leash when you take the other dog.
One day they both will get on the same schedule it may take awhile.
Is there anything you can put between the rod iron fence to keep the dogs from getting out. It is only a matter of time before on of them will get out!!!
Good Luck
