Therapy Dogs – New Jersey?

Filed under Care & Training Q&As

I recently adopted a cockapoo puppy, he’s 4 months old. He has a great temperament, intelligent and really affectionate, not overly aggressive. I think he would make a good candidate for a therapy dog. I am interested in learning more about the training of therapy dogs. I live in Morris County NJ and am interested in becoming involved in a Therapy Dog Group. Any helpful suggestions would be greatly appreciated! Thank You!

These people are fantastic. I have a friend who has a black lab and attended their classes, he praises them constantly.

long island has therapy groups that get together and train for this purpose.. contact your local dog club and go from there
you certainly cannot tell what the temperament will be like with a mixed breed,,, specially because the irresponsible people who bred the mix USUALLY have ill tempered, unhealthy specimens,,, PRECISELY why they breed mixes.. no one else would breed to them

    Requirements differ between ech group.
Most will require that your dog pass his CGC title with the AKC.
You will need to train with the dog and then pass the test.
They are given several times per year by dog clubs in your area.
Look up one of the dog clubs in your area or training clubs and ask them about if and when they give the test. They should also be able to help you to learn what is required to pass the test.
Then work on training with your dog.
    good luck
