Which Dog Would Be Good For Me?

I want a small dog — preferably under 12lbs when fully grown. I dont want him to shed, and if he is good for allergy sufferers, that would be great.
I want a dog that is loving, sweet, playful, not extremely hyper, but not a couch potato, doesnt require much grooming, doesnt bark much, easy to train, etc.
I dont really care if he is a hybrid or a pure bred, i just dont want to spend a huge amount of money on him ($300 max)
I also want him to be a little cutie that loves cuddling.
As of right now i’m thinking about getting a cockapoo, a maltipoo or a yorkipoo. Yes, i know that they are mutts, but who cares. And yes, i would check out local shelters first.
This is all of the details that i can think of right now.
So, which type of dog do you think would be perfect for me?
Any and all help is appreciated. And if you know any good sites, that would also be appreciated.
Thanks.
Oh, and yes – i asked this question earlier. I would just like more answers.

Check out the shelters, don’t ever buy a mix from a a breeder. The mixes you listed do shed – just because they are mixed with poodle doesn’t mean they are hypoallergenic or don’t shed. Your best bet is a purebred toy poodle or a shih tzu. Since they shed very little, they need an occasional trip to the groomer. But there are lots of shih tzus and poodles in shelters and rescues.

Well ,I have an affenpinshcer and he is wonderful. Only 10 pounds and he is full grown. I suggest buying mixes. Don’t buy from the pet store please!

Unfortunately ALL the breeds you mention are High Maintenance for grooming needs! If you want a poo cross you need to think of a cross with a Min Pin or a manchester terrier, maybe even a papillion. Or a smooth coated chihuahua. You do not want to buy a cross that is bred with a non-stop growing coat. That is a recipe for thick coat, mats and frequent grooms. (monthly)
You could also consider a powder puff chinese crested. Most people who buy a chinese crested want the naked variety but most naked litters include at least one powder puff puppy as well as the naked ones. Although a C.C.P.P. will also require fairly regular grooming.
Also if no one is actually allergic in your family, and you just don’t want a big shedder, consider a smooth coated chihuahua purebred. They are adorable and under 12 pounds.

I have a Shih Tzu puppy, and she is all of the things you are looking for, with the exception of grooming. They do require grooming more often than a lot of other breeds. I have had her for 3 weeks now, and she is about 90% housebroken (still have an occational accident). She knows how to fetch and speak. She loves to be cuddled, and always wants to be with me. She doesn’t bark much, except when she wants to go outside, or while playing. My daughter is allergic to a lot of animals, but this one doesn’t bother her. She is such a sweetie with a great personality!

Italian Greyhound!!!! They are the best dogs you could think of. PLAYFULL, CUTE, LOW COST, LOVE TO CUDDLE! Italian Greyhounds would be the answer if your preferences were parts of an equation, trust me!!!
At least look in to it, they have some great websites solely on Italian Greyhounds. (sorry I don’t know the names) I had one, and she was amazingly cool.

I have owned many dogs. Preferably under 12 lbs… I would have to recommend a good tempered chihuahua. They do exist. Out of the 10 or 11 chihuahuas we’ve owned as a family there has only been one with a bad temperament but that was mostly due to his previous home conditions before he was rescued. Chihuahuas are very smart. Sometimes smarter than we realize. Its also well tested that these dogs are really hard to be allergic to. They rarely shed and there are short haired and long haired breeds. They also make really good guard dogs. Yorkis and yorki mixes will 90 % of the time have long hair. Most other breads do need grooming in the toy groups. The local shelter or the AKC website could give you more details about personality per breed.

We had a peek-a-poo and he was the sweetest dog. We still miss him. He was all the things you described.

i would try a bichon frise, they are small, loving, non-allergenic, non-shedding dogs and do not require a lot of grooming (unless you want them to look like a show dog). you can also get them somewhat cheap, depending on the blood-lines. I myself have two of them and they are great little dogs that are always happy to see you.

Any kind of poodle mix requires alot of grooming, and poodles are known to be barkers, a min pin would be a good dog for you. there small and they don’t shed much.

if you want a nonshedder, i wouldn’t go with the mutts, since they do shed some. a perfect dog for you is a poodle. poodles don’t shed, train very easily and LOVE to learn things, love to play, and will snuggle up to you on a cold night. miniature poodles, toy poodles and teacup poodles are all (usually) under 12 pounds when full grown, but i would recommend a mini poodle, since they tend to be less hyper than their smaller cousins. you can find poodles at shelters and probably poodle rescues. check out petfinder.com, they can show you what places near you have poodles, and also what age they are.
i have a mini poodle myself, and he is a great dog! we got him from a breeder, and he was about $300, which is what you said was the max you would be willing to pay. we get my dog groomed every two or three months, but we don’t do that ridiculous poodle cut with the puff balls, we just get him trimmed, and it’s very affordable.
    i wish you luck!!

We’re getting a Boston Terrier. They don’t shed, can be smaller, can get all excited BUT can be just as happy lounging about and cuddling with you. They are EXTREMELY intelligent and easy to train (although you must be smart in your training ways). Not a barker……little to no grooming required. I’ve done EXTENSIVE research on this breed and we are anticipating a pup in late spring. We have a one year old daughter who will be 1 1/2 but the time we get him. We chose this breed because of all the factors I stated above, as well as and most importantly because they are excellent with children. I’ve also found that anyone that has anything negative to say about BT’s….they really don’t know the breed. Plus….they are super cute!! Good luck….this can be a very exciting addition to your fam!!

I highly recommend a shih tzu. I have one myself. He is very fat (17 pounds), but most are around 12 pounds. Look up the breed for more info. He is an extreme lap dog at night, but during the afternoon he can be as hyper as ever. So, it really depends on the time of day. They are very easy to groom as long as you get the hair cut short every once in awhile. As long as the hair is cut short, the shih tzu will not need much grooming. All dogs shed, but some more then others. Shih tzus hardly shed whatsoever. My dog absolutely loves cuddling, he sleeps on my bed with me at night. About the training, I taught him a trick (the trick was bang or play dead you may call it) in two to three days. Which is very good, I did it every night for three days and he learned it! Right now it is 9 o’ clock p.m. right now when I am typing this and he is laying on his dog bed asleep. Local shelters are awesome. (We actually bought him at a humane society) They get along good with other dogs. Although mine does not like cats…but if you raise them around other household pets at a young age they will get used to each other. I hope that you think about buying a shih tzu. They are wonderful dogs. If you have anymore questions let me know!
P.S. If you decide to buy one then make sure that you spay or neuter it unless you decide to be a VERY responsible breeder. :)

Get a stuffed animal. It is the only thing that will meet ALL of your standards. You are looking for the “perfect” dog. and no matter how hard you look, you aren’t going to find one that meets ALL of your standards. Be open to alternatives. And please, only go to shelters or rescues. Don’t buy from breeders or pet stores.

Actually the dog I might get soon applies to all of the specifications you wanted above. She is a Peak a Shih. Or a Peak a poo mixed with a Shih Tzu so a Peak a Poo or a Shih Tzu woud e good dogs too. They are all very cute and whenyou mx the two dogs together to get a puppy you know the hair is sometimes crimpy. My friend is selling thoes puppies for $250. But mine is free since I am her best friend. Not meaning to brag or anything just saying.
